Highlights: This is a budget camping adventure which starts from Nairobi and ends in Nairobi. You will be able to visit the 7^Th wonders of the World – Maasai Mara from Nairobi then proceed to Nakuru National Park and then to Samburu National Park. You will stay in tents or Guest houses at the various campsites within the Maasai Mara National Reserve , Nakuru National Park and Samburu National Park.

The Maasai Mara, now The New 7the wonder of the world and 4^th preferred tourist destination in the world is a home to wildlife in such abundance and variety that it is difficult to imagine. The most spectacular event of the natural world takes place here; The annual migration of millions of wildebeest and zebra from the Serengeti (Tanzania) in search of water and pasture while being  followed on their heels by the predators of the savanna; lion, cheetah, wild dog, jackal, hyena and vultures.

 It hosts over 450 species of animals which include lions, rhinos, hippos, crocodiles, giraffe, wildebeests, zebras, buffalo, warthogs, hyenas, jackals, wild dogs, buffalo, leopard, many kinds of antelopes and elephants.

Lake Nakuru is a soda lake on the floor of the Rift valley. It  is famous due to its being a home to about  1.5 million flamingo's and the over 450 species of birds found here. The sight of the millions of flamingos is quite spectacular. From a distance the lake appears ringed in pink. The Lake has also earned a reputation as an important haven for endangered species - particularly the Rothschild Giraffe and the black and white rhino. It is a home to Lions, waterbucks, buffalos, baboons and pelicans.

Samburu National Reserve is a wildlife haven. Here you will spot Africa’s big cats - lions, cheetahs and the elusive leopard. Some animals are unique to this northern Kenya park: Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe, kudu and gerenuk. The The Ewaso Nyiro River, the boundary with the neighboring Buffalo Springs National Reserve, is where the elephants, buffalo and other animal species gather for a drink. You will find the scenic semiarid landscape quite dramatic. The reserve is located within the lands of the colourful semi-nomadic Samburu tribesmen.

Itinerary:

Day 1: Nairobi - Masai Mara
On arrival at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, or if you are staying in a Nairobi City Hotel, our tour manager will meet you and brief you on your safari, and thereafter depart for Masai Mara Game Reserve via the viewpoint of the Great Rift Valley, lunch enroute. Arrive in time for an evening game drive in this pristine, unequalled ‘big game reserve’. Dinner and overnight at campsite.

Day 2: Masai Mara
This will be a day of tracking game with your guide, after an early breakfast.

The Mara’s landscape is scenic savannah grassland on rolling hills, which enables the reserve to attract sufficient rainfall to maintain and support a large population of herbivores, together with the predators that follow. Elephant, lion, buffalo can be seen with relative ease though luck is a necessary factor for spotting rhino and leopard that complete the big five as the two animals are very timid and sparsely numbered. Plains game like wildebeest, zebra and Maasai giraffe abound as well as hippos and a wide variety of antelopes including impala, dik dik, hartebeest, Grant’s gazelle and Thompson’s gazelle among others.

We will cater for a picnic lunch at the hippo pool. In the evening, return to the campsite for dinner and an overnight stay.

Day 3: Masai Mara
After breakfast, another day of tracking game with your guide till dawn.

Maasai Mara National  Reserve borders Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park and is the annual seasonal scene of the migration of close to 800,000 zebra and wildebeest that occurs between the two parks. In the afternoon there is a choice between a game drive and a nature walk escorted by our armed Maasai guides. At extra cost, you may visit a local Maasai village to see their nomadic lifestyle; the Maasai are famous for their bravery, as they have co-existed with the animals over the years.

 All meals and overnight at the campsite.

Day 4: Maasai Mara – Nakuru

0630 hrs- early morning game drive - if you still want to go for more

OR

Take the opportunity to fly over the Mara in a Hot air Balloon provided at an extra cost. The balloon package includes a champagne breakfast in the wild! If you can spare the money, viewing abundant game afloat a balloon is an unforgettable experience.

 After breakfast, leave Masai Mara for Nakuru with a stop for lunch enroute, with scenic views of Lake Naivasha and Mount Longonot, which are in the Great Rift from afar on the main highway. Dinner and overnight at campsite

 Day 5: Lake Nakuru - Samburu
After breakfast, a morning game viewing drive will follow in Lake Nakuru National Park, the abode of various water birds that breed in the lake’s salty water including flamingos, white pelicans and marabou stork; white rhino may be seen as well as the rare Rothschild’s giraffe, cape buffalo and other plains game in this park that is 188 square kilometres.

Depart for Samburu Game Reserve for dinner and overnight at the campsite; via the Thompson Falls, which are named after Joseph Thompson, one of the first European explorers who walked from Mombasa to Lake Victoria in the 1880’s.

Day 6: Samburu
Morning and afternoon game viewing drives in Samburu with a lunch and leisure break at the campsite in mid afternoon.

Samburu is north of the equator and contains rare, drought resistant animal species, which go for long periods of time without water. These include the reticulated giraffe, grevy’s zebra, the blue-shanked Somali ostrich, the gerenuk or giraffe gazelle and the beisa oryx. In the late afternoon (at an extra cost), go for optional activities like having a nature walk, visiting Samburu villages to see the nomadic lifestyle or swimming in the nearby lodges.

Day 7: Samburu - Nairobi
After breakfast, depart Samburu for Nairobi, lunch enroute, with scenic views of Mount Kenya’s peak if the weather permits. Very pleasant countryside with tea and coffee plantations will be by-passed enroute to Nairobi. Arrive in the evening.

Mount Kenya National Park: The national park around Mt Kenya is very different from all others. For one thing, the protected area only starts at a height of 3,300meters above sea level and because of the rough mountain country is unsuitable for a motor safari. For another, although many animals live here (e.g. Elephants, Buffaloes) you do not see many of them except at the water hole by the “mountain lodge” where particularly at night many animals can be observed. The unique vegetation and fantastic scenery attract mountaineers and botanists who can plunge through mountain forests draped with lianas, bamboo and fields of giant heather before coming to the Alpine moorland, bizarre volcanic formations and finally, the eternal ice and glaziers of the summit region.

Tsavo East and Tsavo West, both national parks are managed separately but together they form the largest reserve in East Africa. The northern part of Tsavo east may not however be visited by tourists. Nevertheless the Tsavo national park founded in 1947 is one of the most visited tourist attraction in Kenya. In spite of its arid countryside and savannah vegetation about 60species of mammals and 400 different species of birds are to be found here. The Tsavo is particularly famous because of its dramatic scenery and the “Red Elephants” which owe their colors to the dust prevalent in this area as well as lions and cheetahs. There are many antelopes (Oryx, kudus, giants gazelles and giraffe) Burchell’s zebras, Masai giraffes baboons and vervet monkeys of the birds the most impressive is the Maasai ostrich. Where there is water such as at Mzima springs, crocodiles and hippos can also be seen.

Amboseli National Park has the combination of scenery, people and animals is what makes the Amboseli national park of fascinating. Beautifully situated at the foot of the towering Kilimanjaro, it Is the home of the brightly painted Maasai tribe, here you can see lions , cheetahs, spotted hyenas and wild dogs as well as gnus , Kaffir buffaloes , Burch ell’s zebras and herds of elephants . All these animals come to drink at water holes consisting of small lakes or muddy ponds kept filled up by water from the melting snows of Kilimanjaro. The northern lake Amboseli contains water only after rain.

Itinerary:

Day 1: Nairobi - Maasai Mara

On arrival at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, or if you are staying in a Nairobi City Hotel, our tour manager will meet you and brief you on your safari, and thereafter depart for the Masai Mara Game Reserve with stops at the viewpoint of the Great Rift Valley and Narok town for lunch and refuelling. Arrive in time for a late afternoon / early evening game drive enroute to a campsite for dinner and overnight.

Day 2: Maasai Mara

Early breakfast then proceed for a full day of game viewing in the reserve.

The day will be taken up tracking game with your guide though there will be a break for a picnic lunch at the hippo pool. The abundance and variety of game in this reserve is nothing short of amazing. Practically every mammal can be seen in the Mara with a few exceptions. Various antelopes, scavengers like hyena and vulture are common. The reserve contains all the cats that are; lion, cheetah and leopard; sighting leopard needs luck more than just being there but lions are abundant and there are excellent chances for spotting cheetah. The hippo pool is a popular spot to watch out for hippos; with luck, you may catch crocodile basking on the rocks. Elephants, buffalo, the Maasai giraffe, wildebeest and the common zebra abound.

Return to the campsite for dinner and overnight.

 Day 3: Masai Mara

After breakfast proceed on another game-viewing session. After lunch you will have the option to go for a game drive or at extra cost, visit a nearby Maasai village to see their nomadic lifestyle. Both activities will end at the campsite in the mid evening where you will retire for the night after dinner.

 Day 4: Masai Mara – Nakuru

Take the opportunity to fly over the Mara in a Hot air Balloon provided at an extra cost. The balloon package includes a champagne breakfast in the wild! If you can spare the money, viewing abundant game afloat a balloon is an unforgettable experience.

After breakfast, depart the Mara region for Nakuru. The drive offers panoramic views of Mount Longonot and Lake Naivasha from afar; this means that you will see them from the main highway. Arrive at Nakuru in time for dinner and overnight at a campsite.

Day 5: Lake Nakuru / Samburu

Wake up to an early morning game drive in Lake Nakuru National Park.

 Flamingos and other water birds that thrive in a salt-water environment can be seen. With luck you may track the white rhino and the Rothschild’s giraffe which both have endangered species status. The park is 188 km and is home to cats (both lion and leopard), various antelopes, and grazers like warthog and the waterbuck and Cape buffalo that breed near the shoreline. After the game drive, depart Nakuru for Samburu via the Thompson falls, which are named after Joseph Thompson, one of the first European explorers who walked from Mombasa to Lake Victoria in the 1880’s. Lunch will be at Nanyuki, which is at the foothills of Mount Kenya.

Arrive at Samburu in the evening, with a game drive enroute to the campsite where you will retire for the night after dinner.

Day 6: Samburu

Morning and afternoon game drives in Samburu with a lunch and leisure break in the mid afternoon.

The reserve is home to rare drought resistant animals that are peculiar to the semi-arid region north of the equator. These include the reticulated giraffe, grevy’s zebra, the Beisa Oryx, gerenuk and the blue-shanked Somali ostrich. Samburu is dry most of the year but is watered by the Ewaso Nyiro River, which rises in the Aberdare’s and drains in the Lorian swamp north of Shaba National Reserve.

Day 7: Samburu - Mount Kenya

After breakfast, leave Samburu for Mount Kenya (Nanyuki) arriving in time for lunch. After lunch, visit the Mau Mau caves (where Kenyan Freedom Fighters could hide from the British Troops during the struggle for Independence).

 After breakfast, drive south via the biggest open-air market in East and Central Africa (Karatina). Proceed to Nairobi arriving in time for lunch in one of the restaurants. Continue to Amboseli via Kenya/Tanzania border (Namanga) arriving in Amboseli in the late afternoon. An evening game viewing drive.

Day 9: Amboseli

After breakfast, proceed on a game drive in this park, which lies in a dried-up lakebed. There are swamps and springs fed by underground rivers from the melting snows of Mount Kilimanjaro, which give permanent water to the wildlife. The animals seen here include lion, elephant, cheetah, buffalo, plains game and the rare Taita weaver and the gerenuk. The animals are mainly found around the Ol Kenya swamp. If the weather is clear and there is no low cloud cover, you may see the peak of Mount Kilimanjaro, which forms a beautiful backdrop to the park. The observation hill offers a view of the entire park and beyond.

An afternoon game drive will follow after lunch. Dinner and overnight at a campsite.

Day 10: Amboseli - Tsavo West

 After breakfast, depart Amboseli for Tsavo West National Park, lunch enroute.

You will visit the Shaitani Lava flows as the area where the park lies is of volcanic origin. The Mzima Springs which contain 20 million tonnes of crystal - clear water from the underground streams of the nearby Chyullu Hills are an additional attraction; various aspects of marine life including hippos, crocodile and fish can be seen from the specially constructed underground glass tank. The animal species seen at Tsavo are hippo, crocodiles, elephant, gazelle, zebra, giraffe, various birds, buffalo, and kudu in a thick acacia setting.

Day 11: Tsavo West - Tsavo East

A morning game drive will follow after breakfast and probably view the rock hyrax, squirrels and mongooses as the park contains a large population of these.

Depart for Tsavo East National Park, lunch enroute at Voi safari lodge.

Here, only the section south of the Galana River is open to the public for game drives; the rest of the park serves as a wilderness for the animals to retreat into. Here the dried up Aruba dam can be seen plus crocodiles at the crocodile view point below the Lugard falls.

 Day 12: Tsavo East - Nairobi

After breakfast, your final game drive will follow during which you may see plains game; zebra, antelope, lesser kudu, ostrich and large herds of elephant. Lunch will be taken enroute. Arrive in Nairobi in the evening.
