Day 1: Moyale Border Crossing – Marsabit National Reserve
The Marsabit National Park lies in northern Kenya, about 560 km north of Nairobi in Marsabit district. The park comprises of densely forested mountain and three crater lakes that are the only permanent surface of water in the region and that provide habitat for a variety of bird life. Major wildlife species include the African elephant, the endangered Gravy’s zebra, lion, leopard, buffalo, bush buck, large herds of greater and lesser kudus, common zebra, grant gazelles and many other small antelopes. The park is famous for its elephant named Ahmed that was provided with 24 hr security surveillance by presidential decree in the 70's, to demonstrate Kenya's commitment to wildlife conservation.
Day 2: Marsabit National Reserve
Marsabit National Reserve consists of a forested mountain that rises like an oasis in the middle of the desert wilderness and is the only source of permanent surface of water in the region. The three spectacular crater lakes provide habitat for a variety of bird life One of the lakes, Lake Paradise, is most scenic and famous from early films and writings of Martin Johnson and Vivien de Wattville. Ahmed, who boasted some of the biggest tusks ever recorded, died at age 55, and his body was preserved and is now on display in Nairobi National Museum.
Day 3: Marsabit National Reserve – Samburu National
Samburu National Reserve is a wildlife haven. Here you will spot Africa's big cats-lions, cheetahs and the elusive leopard. Some animals are unique to this northern Kenya Park; gravy's zebra, reticulated giraffe, kudus and gerenuk. The Ewaso Nyiro River, which is the boundary with the neighboring Buffalo Springs National Reserve, is where the elephant buffalo and other animal species gather for a drink. You will find the scenic semiarid landscape quite dramatic. The reserve is located within the lands of the colorful semi-nomadic Samburu tribesmen.
Day 4: Samburu National Reserve
In addition to Kamunyak, the renowned lioness famous for adopting Oryx calves, the Samburu National Park boasts of some several species of animals which are considered unique to the region, including its unique dry-country animal life. All three big cats, Lion, Cheetah and Leopard can be found here, as well as Elephants, Buffalo and Hippos. Other mammals frequently seen in the park include Gerenuk, Grant's gazelle, Kirk's Dik-dik, Impala, Water buck, Gravy’s Zebra, Beisa Oryx and Reticulated Giraffe. Rhinos are no longer present in the park due to heavy poaching. There are over 350 species of birds which include Somali Ostrich, Kingfisher, Sunbird, Bee-eater, Marabou Stork, Tawny Eagle, Bateleur, Guinea fowl and Vultures. The Ewaso Nyiro River contains large numbers of the Nile crocodile.
Day 5: Samburu National Reserve – Mt. Kenya National Park
The local communities surrounding Mount Kenya are mainly the Kikuyu, Meru, and Embu. The Kikuyu communities believe that their God lived on Mount Kenya when he came down from the sky. That mountain was God's throne on earth. Mt. Kenya dominates the southern and western sides of the mountain where agriculturalists are highly favored by the fertile volcanic soil on the lower slopes. The Meru communities dominate the East and North of the Mountain, and are known to keep livestock. The Embu people, like the Kikuyu believe that the mountain is the home of their God and they therefore dominate the windward side of the Mountain. Because of this, all the communities around the region believe that Mount Kenya is Sacred.
Day 6: Mt. Kenya National Park – Nairobi
Mt. Kenya is the largest mountain in Kenya and is a dome-shaped central volcano. Several types of volcanic rocks make up the mountain. There are ten glaciers covering the volcano peaks. The National Park around Mt Kenya is very different from all others. For one thing, the protected area only starts at a height of 3,300meters above sea level and because of the rough mountain country is unsuitable for a motor safari. Although many animals live here (e.g. Elephants, Buffaloes) you do not see many of them except at the water hole by the "mountain lodge" where particularly at night many animals can be observed. The unique vegetation and fantastic scenery attract mountaineers and botanists who can plunge through mountain forests draped with lianas, bamboo and fields of giant heather before coming to the Alpine moorland, bizarre volcanic formations and finally, the eternal ice and glaziers of the summit region.
