VSMT 14 - 6 days Sirimon Mt. Kenya Trek

Day 1: Nairobi-Nanyuki

Mount Kenya Trek

Depart Nairobi in the early afternoon for Nanyuki where you will arrive by early evening. Overnight at either the Mt. Kenya Paradise Hotel and Campsite or the Nanyuki Riverside Camp. Meet with your Guide in the evening and receive a briefing about the walk ahead.

Day 2: 1950-3300M
Transfer from Nanyuki to Sirimon Park gate at 2635m. The acclimatising walk starts at the gate and goes to Old Moses camp. This important 9km will lead you through the equatorial rain forest with a chance to see animals like black and white colobus monkeys, buffalo's, elephants and varieties of birds. The hiking may take 3 -3 ½ hours and a slow pace is strongly advised. Dinner at overnight at Old Moses camp (bunkhouse).

Day 3: 3300-4200m
Morning meal followed by 14 ½ km trekking. Leave early enough to cover 7 hours walking through the undisturbed moorland with its combination of special mountain plants that never grow below 3500m, into Mackinder valley beneath the peak with its ancient lobelia plants and many varieties of birds. There is a high chance of being entertained by the rock hyrax, the only high altitude surviving animal, which is believed to be a cousin to the elephant. Lunch enroute. Dinner overnight at Shipton's camp. (bunkhouse).

A Hut on Mount Kenya

Day 4: 4200-4970m
Anti-clockwise semi circuit to Austrian hut to make a 4-5 hours trek, always with peak views in front of you. Starting with steep climbing right from Shipton's camp, the trail leads you to Hausberg Col, 4590m. Lunch at hut turn. Dinner and overnight at Austrian hut (bunkhouse).

Day 5: 4790-4985-1950m (Point Lenana)
After a quick and light breakfast (tea & biscuits) and set out for Point Lenana around 5 am so as to be at the top by 6 o'clock with a chance to see the sunrise and Kilimanjaro, if the weather allows. This is the one of the longest views in the world. After a photo session descend back to Shiptons hut for a real breakfast and proceed down to Old Moses Hut. Lunch enroute, dinner and overnight at Old Moses Hut.

Day 6: 3040-1950m
After breakfast proceed down to the Park Gate. A 9km leisure walk through the tropical rain forest leads you to where you connect with transport for transfer back to Nanyuki and then Nairobi.
